It seems as if the poetry corner is an appropriate place for all sorts of creative endeavors.  Tonight's presentation is Nika's artwork from the computer.  She definitely has her own style.  Enjoy "The Midnight Time" by Veronika Willardson.

I guess I need to show her how to use the text tool for her thought balloons.

Backyard Visitor
Fox in the Backyard 12-6-2011

In the morning
In the snow
mama let our own dog go.
When she looked -
to her surprise -
She saw a fox
Before her eyes.
"A fox. A fox!"
She called for help.
Our own dog,
Bravely chased, not yelped.
A brief encounter
Near the fence -
Tensions flaring,
Such suspense!
A fox is clever, wily, keen;
He jumped the fence to forest green.
A small adventure to start the day -
We wish they all would start that way!

Imperfect Haiku - An American Tradition

Today we tried haiku as we ate Halloween candy for dessert after dinner.  Nika was really into counting syllables and one of the pieces here is completely her own words.  Lina surprised us the other night by reciting most of our first poem by memory.  This experiment seems to be paying off... now to the haiku!

(Candy)
Halloween candy
comes in handy,
when sugar is in short supply.

(About Lina)
Vampire lady with purple teeth
climbs on mama's lap,
not too scary.

(About the twins)
Twin girls eat rice
and stroganoff from a bowl,
eternally eating.

(Nika's Flower Haiku)
Flowers fall when it's snowing
without even knowing
when spring is here.

(Nika's Candy Haiku)
When hungry for a sweet
people go trick or treat -
candy is lovely.

In unrelated news, it seems someone reported this blog to Facebook for offensive content.  Not sure why.  If it was you, let us know so we can figure out why you hate poetry so much :)

1st Grade Life Science - Zombie Edition

Today was parent teacher conference.  We found out that Nika went through/is going through a zombie phase.  This was from her science class.  Kids are awesome!

Now it's your turn.  A _____ is living.  A zombie ______ is not living.

More poems later this week.  We may try dinnertime Haiku.

Happy Halloween Poem

"Trick or Treat"

It's a cold night in October
Chilly screeching wind howls.
With autumn nearly over
The night belongs to more than owls.

Witches, skeletons, werewolves, ghosts,
Monsters, vampires, and more -
Parties with their ghoulish hosts
Joining with this frightful tour.

Glowing Faces on the stoops -
Promise of rewards so sweet,
Children scavaging in groups
All shouting "Trick or Treat!"

Inaugural Family Poem

Dreams on a Starry Night

Golden flowers in the night,
Up above us, oh so bright.
Silver eyeball looking down,
Upon the silence all around.

Sleeping children in their beds,
All wrapped up in silky threads
Dreaming dreams of fairy life
Without a care or any strife.

Soon they'll waken to the day
Games of magic they will play.
In a world by dreams inspired
They'll spend the day until they tire.

And darkness follows once again
And soothes the children with its reign.
